Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things. This is exactly what Raghu Vasoiya, an arts and craft teacher, in Anjar Nagar primary school in Anjar, Kutch has shown by adopting to an innovative method of teaching children.
Raghu has pursued arts and craft as his passion and has been an arts and craft teacher all his life. He has worked as one for 26 years and is currently working in Anjar Nagar primary school which imparts education to 142 children.
“I felt there was an urgent need to teach children through ways in which that are not quite conventional. A child is used to learning from what is written in the black board, but we as teachers have to consistently brainstorm to device methods that can well and truly reach the subject matter to the student’s mind,” said Raghu.
In 2009, he decided to put his art and craft skills to use by sketching letters of Gujarati alphabets in the floors of the classrooms. Raghu was of the firm opinion that it is students in grade I and II who have to be taught the importance of letters and thus felt that this can be an important start for the entire school.
“Every day a child is given an alphabet to sit on, and throughout the day he is sitting on the same alphabet. Thereby it gets registered in them. When the teacher asks them in class, the student emphatically states the letter in which they were sitting on,” explained Raghu. As time progressed students began to imbibe the letter in which they sat on and looked forward to the next letter they would sit on during subsequent days. The logic behind integrating this into a student’s learning is the fact that Raghu believed every day the child is used to seeing letters written on the board and there was no such definitive step to check if they have really imbibed the letters or the words taught.
“The student is used to seeing letters on the blackboard and they immediately write it down in their slates. But after implementing this we noticed, it was becoming convenient for the students to remember,” explained Raghu.
Raghu believed that the school has achieved its objective of helping the child remember what they are learning in school, and so much so that they in turn ask their parents to question them on which letter they learnt today.
“Change is visible, when a child sits on a particular letter and goes back home, he or she makes it a point to sit down with their parents and requests them to ask them in return which letter they learnt. Thereby we are facilitating revision as well, right at their homes,” he said.
Raghu opined that every student is allotted one letter per day and in order to get their fluency in place as far as words are concerned, they are asked to form different words of their own choice.
“If after a week, you pose a particular word to these children, they would be able to arrange themselves and form it on their own. This form of learning is helpful for those who are not fluent in learning letters by writing or watching the blackboard. As a result of deeply imbibing the letters, they begin to start reading and writing those letters which they have learnt during the course of the week,” he said.
Noticing results in the children, teachers spend one hour everyday imparting this innovative method of teaching. “Teachers make full use of the hour allotted to them, they teach children the importance of words. To learn the importance of words at a tender age is quite beneficial,” said Raghu.
Raghu Vasoiya of Anjar in Kutch is an example of how teachers in Gujarat are emerging to benefit their students understand the nuances involved in learning and grasping the subject matter. They are also successfully leading the pack as transformers.
Gujarat Government in partnership with Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM – A) has set out to identify innovative teachers across the state primary and senior secondary schools. An MOU in this respect has been signed between the IIM-A and the Gujarat Educational Innovation Commission and Gujarat Council for Educational Research and Training.
He is not a member of the Gram Panchayat or the panisamiti in Zahirpura village, Mehsana district. He is handicapped and his legs are weak. ‘Inner strength’ has been the factor which has consistently pushed Mohammedali Balya, a farmer, to give nothing less than his best to see his village fully developed.
He is an excited man, when he talks about how he envisions his village to be. “Any community work for the benefit of the society should be done by us,” he said. True to what he said, Mohammedali Balya has shown how to transform adversity into strength.
“Whenever any specific community development project, scheme or work of the Gujarat government has come our way, we’ve always felt excited. Not just I, every family living here wants to see a fully developed village. That was the case with Sector Reform Scheme (SRS) as well,” he enthused.
One of the everlasting uncertain predicaments of Zahirpura has been dearth of water. The situation in 2001 ensured that looking after families or household work became non-existent, especially for the women folk in the village. Incredibly long hours of wait for the tanker and as it arrived consistent bouts put in perspective Zahirpura’s dire need for water.

In order to fight the silent epidemic of Malnutrition, Anganwadi centres play the catalysts in helping reach the benefits of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) to the people. To check how efficiently and effectively each anganwadi centre is functioning, Kutch child development authorities have embarked upon a novel initiative to find out ‘Holistic Anganwadi Centres’ in the district.
The initiative which was started in February 2013, witnessed child development and other government officials visiting anganwadi centres on a monthly basis to measure their success based on a questionnaire
“We did not have officials from our own talukas coming and visiting us. That was one of the uniqueness of this exercise, those who were not used to seeing us daily were asked to come and observe how we function. So it was a fresh experience for the anganwadi workers as well,” said Vidhya Patel, an anganwadi worker in Mandvi taluka, Kutch. The objective was simple as it was to check if the anganwadi centres are following the guidelines as prescribed in the ICDS scheme. Some of the aspects which went into monitoring the centres were, if the appointed anganwadi worker has been trained and is helpful towards the beneficiaries.Details such as the Anganwadi centre’s infrastructure and its maintenance were checked. Specifically those inspecting were also asked to look into how the sanitation facilities of an Anganwadi centre were and if improper, they in turn were asked to suggest necessary improvements.
“Apart from checking the physical infrastructure of sanitation facilities, the observers also checked if we regularly brief our children about cleanliness as that is an important part of our daily schedule,” said Vidhya Patel.
In addition, how regularly medical check-ups with the help of the medical officers have been organised for the anganwadi centre was also reviewed.Significantly the status of under-nourished and mal-nourished children were carefully observed and the centre’s track record in fighting the epidemic over years was also noted down.
“Basics such as keeping track of the child’s weight and its growth chart were checked. This helped us identify how many children were still malnourished and what sort of efforts we need to put in to fight it out. The moment the observers noticed that here was something which we could plan better and take better action, they shared it with us which enabled us to serve our beneficiaries better,” she said.
The examiners also paid heed if the Anganwadi worker is reaching out the village and organising any special programmes for community mobilization and the regular gram sabhas (social audit forums).
“In Gujarat, women are chosen to play a significant role in community mobilization and this is precisely the reason numerous Sakhi Mandals (self-help groups) and Matru Mandal (Mother support groups) were formed. So how efficiently these were functioning was also checked and if through them we are organising specific community mobilization programmes was taken note of,” she said. After having observed what they saw, the child development officials enlisted what are the possible strengths and weaknesses of the Anganwadi centre. “We may have set out with a particular objective, but this review helps us identify where we stand from the time we had set out. This exercise has helped us grow and sincerely work towards providing quality to our beneficiaries,” she said.
Vidhya Patel also opined that the entire exercise has ensured that all the centres are alert and the workers put in that extra bit of hard work to ensure that their centre is a holistic one.
“From the time we were told that we would have officials coming to examine our anganwadi centre, we have been on our toes. Consistently once in a month since February they have been coming and observing, so it helps us also learn that we must be perfect in serving the society always. It cannot be just for the sake of their visit,” she said.
Wherever required, officials ensure to draft their possible solutions where the anganwadi centres could improve themselves and thereby benefit the society. “This has taught us that we must keep continuously improving. Some of the constructive suggestions are put forth to us and we make due note of it to take corrective measures. We know and understand that this is to keep us intact,” emphasized Vidhya.
